Curriculum vitae

Njål Sparbo, bassbaritone (b. 1964)

Njål Sparbo has studied with Aase Nordmo Løvberg, Ingrid Bjoner, Knut Skram and Tor Hommeren. He has attened master classes with Hans Hotter, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Kurt Moll in Germany, Galina Vishnevskaya and Thomas Hemsley in England, Jorma Hynninen in Finland and Susanna Eken in Denmark.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS

RESEARCH

Sparbo work of Edvard Grieg's songs for years. He rehearsed and performed all 172 songs during a series of seven concerts in Bergen in 2007 together with the pianist Einar Røttingen. At the same time he digitalized songs, and they are now available for download in all keys on norwegiansongs.net.

He is currently a fellow in the program for artistic research at the National Academy og the arts in Oslo, Faculty of performing arts. His project is titled: "Singng on the stage - with a psychophysical approach". Please follo the link to Research for more information.

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE WORK

Njål Sparbo is the manager of record company Quattro AS and The Oslo Grieg Society.
In 2010 he was a festival for the The Oslo Grieg Festival.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Sparbo is a popular singing teacher and regularly teaches master classes, courses and seminars. He has taught at the Barratt Due Institute of Music and the University of Oslo, and is currently working as a singing teacher for the Oslo Philharmonic Choir.

CHAMBER MUSIC / ENSEMBLES

Sparbo has been member of various ensembles, Oslo Bachensemble, the vocal quartet Quattro Stagioni (1987-95) and the baroqueensemble DellaStrada. As a soloist he has had concerts with ensembles like CIKADA, BIT 20 and the Vertavo quartet, with concerts in Norway, Denemark, Sweden, Finland, Island, Germany, England, France, Spain and Italiy.

Through his career Sparbo has been active in early music and baroque ensembles, and he often performs songs with the lute player Vegard Lund. He has worked with Andrew Parrott, Laurence Cummings, Shalev ad El, Rolf Lislevand a.o. as well as the following ensembles:
